Configuring a Barcode Reader

If you have a barcode scanner that needs to be reconfigured, the first step is to obtain the correct barcode configuration sheet. Once you have the relevant config sheet, the next step is to carry out the configuration.

Configuring Your Scanner

Before doing anything with your scanner:

  • Print the config sheet onto paper, do not try scanning it on your screen.
  • Ensure that the room you are in is not too brightly lit, especially with natural light as this can cause the scanner to not always read the barcodes accurately.

Scanning:

  • Plug the scanner into your computer, if you hear a beep, this means the scanner is powered and ready. If you don't hear a beep, the scanner may still be able to scan, but the beep sound may be turned off.
  • Scan each barcode one at a time, in order, from top to bottom.

Testing Your Scanner

The best way to test your barcode configuration is to scan a barcode into an application like Notepad.

When a scanner is configured correctly it should output the number with a prefixed tilde:

  • ~000293
  • ~662773
  • ~R99384
  • ~B6F3994
