Editing a CSV File

If you need to modify a CSV file for the purpose of your student import, you must use a text editor such as Notepad, which is unlikely to alter the formatting.

When opening a CSV file with other programs such as Microsoft Excel, it will most likely strip out any leading 0's if they are discovered in any of the fields. This most commonly occurs with the borrowers Management Information Systems ID number. Opening the CSV file in Excel strips out the 0's so 0012345 becomes 12345 meaning the library system cannot match and update the borrower records. This can often result in duplicate borrowers/records.

To Edit in Notepad

Right-click on your CSV and select 'Open With' then select 'Notepad'.

Make the changes as required.

Click 'File' and then 'Save' when you have finished.
