The Reading Cloud library system on registering a fingerprint converts 5 points on the finger into a long string of characters and stores the fingerprint data in an encrypted file either on the library machine or on a server depending on how you set the system up.

The 5-point string is not able to be used in any other system and it would only ever be possible to recreate a partial fingerprint image. As part of the change to government legislation in 2013, biometric data changed from opt out to an opt in. Therefore, schools need to contact all parents to gain consent for the use of the fingerprint within the library system and store this information at the school. Due to this change we partnered with BioStore who incorporates this feature.

We provide two ways to delete fingerprint data, this is not an automatic process when a borrower is deleted from the library system:

  • Manually per person by opening the registration tool and deleting the data.
  • Manually for everyone by deleting the .DAT file.
